The province remains a safe place to visit, live, invest, and do business, said PCol Dwight D. Monato, acting provincial director of the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office (MOCPPO).

In a recent episode of Let’s Talk MisOcc, a virtual media forum, the provincial director shared that there were two incidents that shook the province, particularly the IED explosion on the convoy of the Governor on October 15 and the gruesome killing of broadcaster DJ Jumalon on November 5, this year, which were classified as motivated attacks.

“The motives of these incidents were quite personal,” he said, adding that perhaps due to their positions, which earned them enemies along the way, they did not indicate a widespread or systematic attack against the larger population in the province.

First, he shared about the challenges they faced in solving the bombing incident in the convoy of Governor Oaminal, where there was a lack of CCTV in the area, no street lights, and no witnesses coming out.

“We really have to rely on the technical investigation and the result of the technical analysis from the regional anti-cybercrime unit from the explosives ordinance; from the forensic units, we have to start from there,” he said.

“It is quite challenging, but we are not lowering our guard, especially when it involves the governor,” the director said.

Meanwhile, in the second sensational case involving broadcaster DJ Jumalon, on November 8, MOCPPO was able to refer murder and theft cases against the identified gunman and his two cohorts.

“It is now ready; it is now sufficient for a preliminary investigation. The gunman has been identified and has been charged, so we are now in the process of identifying the two other involved suspects,” the director shared.

Personal responsibility is very crucial for media practitioners, he said.

“Our media should be very discerning about the issues that they discuss or tackle during their program. Their vigilance about their security about their surroundings They should also know the security tips of the PNP,” Monato said. (JMOR/PIA-10/Misamis Occidental)
