Feature: MisOcc families: From IDPs to safe returns


A total of 10 families from Sitio Matol, situated 1.5 kilometers away from Barangay Napangan, Don Victoriano sought refuge in the wake of the armed encounter that unfolded on September 17, 2023, between the 10th Infantry Battalion and the weakening Guerilla Front Sendong.


A remarkable tale of resilience and community support emerged.


As a proactive measure, the evacuation of affected individuals and families was set into motion, spearheaded by the 10th Infantry Battalion.


The battleground was in the vicinity Brgy Napangan, a mere 1.5 kilometers from the heart of the said barangay. Such skirmishes invariably placed a burden on the locals, forcing them to grapple with the necessities away from home.

In this time of crisis, the 10IB, in collaboration with the Province of Misamis Occidental, emerged as the beacon of hope for the displaced families.


A total of 10 families from Sitio Matol, situated 1.5 kilometers away from Barangay Napangan sought refuge.

Governor Henry S. Oaminal, at the helm of the Province of Misamis Occidental, extended a helping hand to these families, and so with other unaffected families. They were provided not only with essential relief goods but also with a renewed sense of security. The collaborative efforts aimed at securing durable solutions to their displacement, including the safe return to their homes.

Remarkably, amidst the turmoil and tension, there were no recorded casualties during or after the armed encounter. This outcome was a testament to the dedication of all parties involved in ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected families.

A sense of relief and optimism prevailed.

All 10 family evacuees have returned to their respective homes, their resilience shining as a beacon of hope. The story of these 10 families serves as a poignant reminder of the strength of communities and the capacity for recovery, even in the face of adversity.
