"It has become a cycle where the poor cannot go to school, cannot work, and will remain in poverty."

In a recent interview during Let’s Talk MisOcc, August 31, Governor Henry S. Oaminal shared that there has to be a stop to this cycle of poverty, which is why he implemented the ‘One family, One professional’ program.

In a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between the province and local government units, grantees can avail themselves of vocational or tertiary education, where they are provided with a P5,000 monthly stipend throughout the semester of the school year.

"Kinahanglan ang Misamisnon magkugi. Ang mga kabatan-onan magkugi og eskwela [There is a need for Misamisnons to work hard. The youth should do their best in school]," he said.

Moreover, another contributor to poverty is a lack of peace and order.

There are still rebels in the mountains where the issue is social injustice and poverty, which is why there is a need to address the insurgency, the governor said.

"Misamis Occidental is probably in the next quarter; we will be declared insurgency-free by the Armed Forces of the Philippines," he added.

Among the targets of the province are to live peacefully, or Malinawon," and to be a drug-free province.

"Hapit na nato makab-ot nga ma-drug-free province kita. Out of 490 barangays, 453 na ang na drug-free [We are almost able to achieve the label of drug-free province. Out of 490 barangays, 453 are already drug-free," he said.

Meanwhile, the crime rate index in Misamis Occidental has decreased.

"With good peace and order, ang ekonomiya medyo nag-improve, nag-develop [our economy has somehow improved, developed]. Atong cycle nga kung [Our cycle where] peaceful ang community, chances are investors will be coming in, and when there are investors, of course there is job opportunity because there will be lots of businesses now that will be established in our locality," the governor explained.

The benchmark or gauge for progress can be seen in the way people live with the vision of Asenso Misamis Occidental, the 5Ms Misamisnong Magpuyong Malinawon, Malambuon, og Malipayon [Misamisnon living peacefully, progressively, and happily].

"Actually happiness is a possible effect of living peacefully and prosperously," said Oaminal. (JMOR/PIA-10)
