In promoting consumer welfare, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Misamis Occidental through its Bureau of Philippine Standards conducted an orientation- seminar on Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Bi-Gi pipes, steel bars and electrical wires to the hardware owners, constructions held at La Elena Fishyalan Aquapark, Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental.

DTI Misamis Occidental Provincial Director Jane Marie L. Tabucan said, “DTI has a twin mandate to develop businesses and empower consumers, and to promote their welfare and protection. This means, we are also promoting products and services that are quality and safe.”

Tabucan also said that there is still a need to further educate the public on the ill-effects of using uncertified and or substandard steel pipe products especially now that we already have two new Philippine Standards for steel pipe products including DAO 19-16 Series of 2019.

Phelps Dodge Philippines Technical Engineer Reginald Villaruel discussed product safety and quality for electrical wires.

“We continuously develop or improve the existing Philippine National Standard for wires and cable. Despite sa pag develop at pag improve ng mga existing PNS talamak pa rin ang pamemeke ng mga wires and cables hindi lang sa mga wires kung hindi sa ibang products kaya we actively participate to this kind of event with DTI,” he said.

(Despite the development and improvement of existing PNS, the misappropriation of wires and cables is still rampant not only in wires but also in other products, so we actively participate in this kind of event with DTI)

He shared how to determine fake wires which are lighter in weight than copper.

Meanwhile, Phelps Dodge Philippines Technical Engineer June Vasquez presented the product safety and quality of ceramic tiles.

"Ang purpose o layunin ng ating orientation-seminar ay ma-educate yung nagtitinda. Maiwasan na tumanggap sila o magbenta ng hindi tama at kalidad na tiles. Kung bibili tayo ng ceramic tiles na product o iba pang brand na nakaka-apekto sa safety hanapin muna natin yung tinatawag na PS mark kung ito ay locally manufactured at yung tinatawag na ICC kung ito naman ay gawa sa ibang bansa.”

(The purpose of our orientation-seminar is to educate the sellers. So that they can avoid accepting or selling incorrect and non-quality tiles. If we buy ceramic tiles product or other brand that ensures safety, let's first look for the so-called PS mark if it is locally manufactured and the so-called ICC if it is made in another country)

Meanwhile, Philippine Steelmakers Association Manager, Technical Affairs Engr. Rudolf T. Miranda said that the importance of the Philippine National Standards is to assure products that really comply with the required specifications of that particular standard.

He underscored that the advocacy of the group is to share information about the right knowledge on how to buy quality and safe products. “All of us consumers, we should know when we buy those safe products and not those very cheap, low quality products. We should adhere to the high quality because it involves lives and safety to our loved ones,” he added.
